Tongue posture
A simple recap of the major points about physiological position:
- the tongue must be in a high position, with its tip and dorsal part in contact with the palatine papillae; in this way the activity shown on the electromyography is minimal,
- presence of a free space in the molar area,
- lips are flexible and connected.
In a pathological position:
- the tongue is in an interdental or addental position,
- the free space in the molar area is increased,
- the lips are not connected and "fall open" (MAURIN).
This position, which is associated with functional problems, increases the likelihood of dento-maxillary abnormalities.
