The lip band

The appearance of the lips:

The lips must come into contact each other without involving any effort or tightening.

In a resting position, the free edge of the upper incisors extends below that of the upper lip by approximately 2 mm.

An examination of their tone and whether they are thick or thin, their degree of eversion, their competency at rest and the association between tightening of the lips and tightening of the mentalis muscle are also important treatment pointers.

The role of the lips:

The lips have an essential role to play as they are involved right from birth where they must ensure that the mouth makes a seal for suckling purposes and they must occlude to allow naso-nasal breathing.

The lips must not contract in adult swallowing, so if the lips move when swallowing then adult swallowing has not been achieved.

The "quality" of the lips and their functional mode are important aspects for the harmonious development of the dento-alveolar and maxillar system.
