Why does your child need functional orthodontic treatment?
Functional orthodontics aim to re-establish the balance of orofacial functions (breathing, swallowing, tongue posture, chewing) thus promoting harmonious and stable dental occlusion (interlocking of jaws), so that growth potential can develop unhindered.
Although functional appliances are no novelty (Robin was using them a century ago), progress in biological concepts and the development of new, effective appliances mean that modern orthodontics are more natural and take a holistic view of the patient.
Functional orthodontics involve a number of disciplines. The speech therapist, the ENT specialist, the osteopath and the physiotherapist are all involved: Incorrect tongue posture also causes speech problems.
